Pointers from Practice: How One Office Chose Its Tool

At Children’s Hospital Boston, we chose the Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS) for reasons specific to our setting.

  • Our population speaks multiple languages and the tool is already translated into many of them (although it’s not necessarily normed).
  • Our population has a high rate of illiteracy or low literacy and the PEDS is the easiest to complete.
  • Residents only attend clinic 1 session per week, and a tool such as the ASQ with 19 versions for different ages would not be mastered by residents – and we did not want different tools used for staff and residents.

In the subsequent modules, we will discuss the PEDS and our experience with it in greater depth.
